Artist Statement

Some form of creativity has always been a part of my life.  In recent years most of my focus has been on two-dimensional art using a variety of media.  I have yet to declare a favorite medium and I enjoy the freedom to alternate among oils, pastel, and water media.  A visual artist is forever challenged to reveal his or her motivation for creating the image.  The subject matter that I paint from is seldom new or unusual.  Consequently, I attempt to interpret a scene with a different way of seeing.  The mundane can often become exciting, mysterious, or romantic if I am successful in adding to or editing from my subject.  It is often difficult to determine when to pronounce a painting 'done.'  My working methods include traveling and constantly observing.  I always carry materials and equipment at the ready to record a scene that strikes my fancy such as an unusual shape, setting, quality of light, etc.  I do on-site sketching, painting, and photography to gather sufficient information.  Occasionally a piece will reach a finished state while painting en plein air but more often I will add the final touches in the studio after looking at them over a period of days.  A good collection of books and video instruction provides me with some knowledge over proper use of materials but I agree with others who declare that most artists are self-taught.  It's my hope that I'll never stop learning from others and to improve through study and practice.  I also have a strong desire to pass along my enthusiasm for art and my knowledge of painting to people who are interested.
